For small shops, inventory is usually the biggest investment. Too much stock ties up cash and takes up space. Too little means lost sales and unhappy customers. These seven habits make a real difference.
1. Record every purchase and sale
Stock records are only as good as the entries behind them. A POS system that updates stock with every sale and purchase removes most manual errors.
2. Know your fast and slow movers
Check which items sell every day and which have been sitting on the shelf for months. Reorder fast movers on time, and run offers to clear slow ones.
3. Set minimum stock levels
Decide the minimum quantity for each important item. When stock drops below that level, your system should alert you so you can reorder before it runs out.
4. Use barcodes
Barcodes speed up billing and reduce mistakes from typing item names or prices. Even simple printed labels work well.
5. Do regular spot checks
Instead of one big annual count, check a few items every week. You will catch theft, damage and data errors much sooner.
6. Track supplier performance
Keep a record of which suppliers deliver on time and at the right price. It helps you negotiate better and avoid stock-outs.
7. Review reports monthly
Look at stock value, dead stock and margins every month. Small adjustments, made regularly, add up to better cash flow.
